ICYMI State's Attorney Kim Foxx: Changing Lives and Keeping Promises
On December 11, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx personally filed the first motions to clear over 1,000 low-level cannabis convictions in the court of Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans. She helped to organize a collaborative effort by city, county, and state officials to help make a fresh start possible for impacted individuals, their families, and communities.
The world is watching the move to reform the criminal court system and Cook County residents want to see how the people they elected deliver on a promise for change. “Having Kim Foxx begin to deliver on using the tools of justice is a key component in decriminalizing cannabis and ending a failed war on drugs," Anton Seals Jr., Lead Steward of Grow Greater Englewood said, “Justice many black and brown communities have been denied and still seek, should not be forgotten," Seals’ added.
The historic action was noted by people from around the country, including Democratic Candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, news outlets like The Hill, and more.
Kim Foxx has lived with surviving domestic violence and homelessness, and it helps her to see people whom others overlook. Seals noted, “Having a State's Attorney who uses restorative justice practices is a tremendous step in the right direction. Kim Foxx furthers the growing national momentum for many who seek racial justice before we center equity."
